On 10th December 1914, 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division, moved into the line at Wulverghem, just south of the Ypres salient. On 14th December, neighbouring divisions attacked the enemy at Wytschaete and this resulted in heavy retaliatory artillery fire from the Germans which lasted for 2 days. Some of these shells landed on 1st East Surrey and inflicted 40 casualties among their ranks, 12 of whom were killed. Alfred Meldrum died from wounds on 16th December, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, and he may have been wounded at this time. |
